A groundbreaking stem cell treatment has successfully improved vision in three out of four patients with damaged corneas. The treatment uses induced pluripotent stem cells from a healthy donor's blood cells to create transparent corneal tissue.
+
The clinical trial involved two women and two men, aged 39 to 72, all with a condition called limbal stem-cell deficiency in both eyes. Doctors removed scar tissue from one eye of each patient and replaced it with lab-grown corneal cells.

Three patients maintained their improved vision for over a year after the procedure. The treatment proved safe, with no tumor formation or immune system rejection—common concerns with transplants.

“These success stories suggest we are headed in the right direction,” Kapil Bharti, a translational stem-cell researcher at US National Eye Institute, commented.
