I applaud efforts to educate the public that depression is not a simple result of serotonin deficiency. But pretending that this theory constitutes our best argument for a biochemical underpinning for depression is simply a strawman. And to mix metaphors, rejecting medications or other bodily-based approaches to depression is throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Dispelling myths shouldn’t necessitate the creation of new myths.
